The project general objectives are:
- Aiming at removing the bottlenecks on this section of the railway line;
- Ensuring an optimal level of integration and of interoperability on this railway section in compliance with the EU requirements;
- Improving and maintaining the quality of infrastructure in terms of safety, security and efficiency;
- Supporting modal split by fostering the use of railway transport.
The project scope is:
The modernisation and upgrade of the 22-km-long railway section of the Orient-East Med core network corridor (Baltic Sea - Black Sea - Aegean Sea and Western Balkans - East Mediterranean European Transport Corridors according Regulation (EU) 2024/1679) ) Sofia km 0+780.87 (excl.) - Elin Pelin km 22+849 (excl.). The upgraded section will be in line with EU requirements for Core Network Corridors as set by Regulation (EU) 2024/1679), namely: 22.5 t axle load, possibility of running trains with a length of 740 m, and at least 100 km/h speed.
